Known as MRT in Taiwan, metro subway services have been developed in multiple cities across the island.
The Taipei MRT was the first system to be launched, and is the standard for other other projects across the island.
Other cities have begun development of MRT facilities and services after the opening of the Taipei MRT in 1996. The first additional city to launch services was Kaohsiung in 2001, followed by Taoyuan in 2017 with service to Taoyuan Airport from Taipei City, integrating with the Taipei MRT. Taichung City is currently constructing its own MRT system.
