서부 종관선 북쪽 (Western Trunk Line North, 縱貫線北段 )

The main line and most frequently trafficked section of the train system, the northern segment of the western trunk line runs between Zhunan near Hsinchu, up through Taoyuan and Taipei, terminating at Keelung near the port.

Passengers traveling between Taipei-Keelung and Taipei-Taoyuan may find taking local trains (區間車) more convenient as opposed to Tze-chiang and others as local trains are more frequent and the speed is comparable across short distances with a cheaper fare.

Passengers traveling between Taipei-Hsinchu may find taking Tze-chiang trains more comfortable since there is reserved seating and more express service over this longer distance. Puyuma limited-express trains may also operate over this line segment. Passengers traveling to Hsinchu Science Park (hi-tech development zone) may choose the High Speed Rail as that station is closer.

South of Zhunan Station, rail services split onto the western section (Coast) and the eastern section through the downtown areas of Miaoli and Taichung City (Mountain). Passengers who wish to alight at a station within the ranges of these sections should pay attention to the markings on the train indicating which section the train will continue onto, marked "Coast 海線" and "Mountain 山線". For passengers traveling through these sections into the southern section of the Western Trunk Line (south of Taichung), choosing a train running along the Coast section may provide nicer views during the ride.
